King of the Hill Reviews

This user review from TV Tropes really slams King of the Hill in a negative way. The author believes that the show is boring, unfunny and offensive. The reason that I like this review is because King of the Hill is a really misunderstood television series and a lot of people feel the same way the author of this review does. A lot of people don’t know that King of the Hill is created by Mike Judge, who is the creator of Beavis and Butthead (among a ton of other things). King of the Hill is a satire so subtle that many people fail to realize it is meant to be a comedy and not a boring, conservative show.

James Poniewozik wrote this review for Time Entertainment immediately prior to the airing of the final two episodes of King of the Hill. (Though he doesn’t mention it in his review, King of the Hill ended in 2009 when Fox replaced it with The Cleveland Show. This, in my opinion, was a terrible idea). This review praised various aspects of the entire series. While a satire, King of the Hill remains stereotypically conservative and politically correct. I enjoyed this review because it seems to mirror many of my ideas about the show. I liked that the review discussed the characters, their traits and their relationships as well. As traditional and conservative as the show may seem on the surface, there are a lot more layers to look into.

This review from AV club lists episodes which the reviewer believes to define the series. It argues King of the Hill’s success came from being so different from other animated shows on television. The review takes note that during the airing of South Park’s controversial “Cartoon Wars” episodes, King of the Hill managed to stay out of that completely. This review focuses on the humility of the show, comparing it to a live-action sitcom, something I have never heard before that I find interesting.
