The Looney Tunes Show: "Double Date" Review

As I have stated in the past, The Looney Tunes Show is a poor example of a TV show that tries to recreate classic cartoon characters living in the 21st century. This is clearly evident in the episode “Double Date.”
What is this horribly, uncreatively named episode about? Dumb ol’ Daffy “wins” a contest, giving him a free night at an expensive looking restaurant, with a date of his choice. Daffy decides to take a female duck who he met while being helped at the Copy Place.

What I absolutely hate about this episode is that a brand new, unnecessary character is introduced; Tina Russo, Daffy’s love interest. Anyone that has ever seen the original Looney Tunes shorts knows that Daffy Duck does not have one particular female counterpart. He has multiple, each appearing in various different shorts. Why did the creators of this show feel they needed to create a brand new character? Why not use one of the one-shot characters that had appeared in one of the classic Looney Tunes shorts?

If you thought that this episode could not get any worse, you will be very disappointed. While Daffy is on his date with this Tina Russo character, the ever so stupid incarnation of Lola Bunny, Bugs Bunny’s girlfriend, stalks the two ducks.

I will be honest. I absolutely hate the idea of Bugs Bunny having a love interest. Unlike Daffy, he never had a single one in the original shorts, and never needed one for that manner. Bugs was such a fun, silly character that he didn’t need a girlfriend. And for that reason, I have always hated Lola Bunny. Ever since her appearance in the poor excuse of a movie known as Space Jam, I have never liked her. Now, however, my hate for her has increased significantly. The creators of the show have changed her. Instead of her having athletic skills, she now has an incredibly low IQ. Now you would think that making a character stupid would make them incredibly funny, right? WRONG! It just makes the character incredibly annoying.

Inserted in the middle of the episode, is one of the show’s infamous Merry Melodies. This time, we get a song performed by the Goofy Gophers, Mac and Tosh and Marvin the Martian, teaching us to, “Be polite. Always be nice. Make sugar your favorite spice.” What? Since when did the Looney Tunes teach us lessons such as to mind our manners? What happened to the good ol’ days when they would blow each other up with TNT? Apparently those days are gone.

And don’t even get me started about the Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short that was shown towards the end of the episode. I don’t understand why these shorts are computer animated. The rest of the show is traditionally animated, so why change the animation style? The transition just doesn't feel right. And if it has to be computer animated, why can’t the animation actually look good? The animation in the original Toy Story, which was released more than fifteen years ago is significantly better.

Stay away from this series. Seriously. Especially this episode.
